If there’s asbestos present we can help you navigate through the first steps of your project.

How do I know if my house has asbestos?

The golden rule for asbestos in Canadian homes is; 1990 or earlier most likely contains asbestos.

I’m remodeling my home. Do I need to be concerned about asbestos in the building Materials?

Yes. The only way to find out if asbestos is present in your planned work area, is to test for it. Here’s a picture of where you might find asbestos in your home. Like we said it was used in literally EVERYTHING!

What is vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral. It’s often flaky and does not burn making it a great insulator. Vermiculite in its purest form is not harmful to the human body. However, most of the Vermiculite deposits that were mined and sold in the US and Canada contained Asbestos rendering it a toxic substance.

As vermiculite was mostly used for insulation purposes its often found in places like attics and sometimes walls. If you drill a hole in either of those places and these tiny rocks start to pour out, it would be best to clear the work area and call a professional.

As a small percentage of vermiculite deposits were in fact pure it is possible that your vermiculite is non-asbestos containing. However, in all the years that We’ve been dealing with vermiculite we have never come across any that was clear of asbestos. We automatically assume it’s asbestos containing to try and minimize the cost of testing.

I’m buying a new home. It has been determined that it has Asbestos and Vermiculite in the ceiling. Should I be concerned and is this dealbreaker?

Buying a new home can be a scary ordeal even without the presence of asbestos. It’s a big life decision and you should completely at ease in your new home. We can assure you that asbestos present in homes has no risk to the inhabitants as long as it’s not disturbed. That doesn’t mean you have to walk on eggshells in your home either. As long as you aren’t doing any sort of renovations or disturbing any surfaces the asbestos will pose no threat.

What Drywall can I for sure recycle?

When recycling drywall you will need to identify when the drywall was made. This will give you a pretty good idea of whether or not it’s asbestos containing. You can find this out by looking for a date stamp on the drywall. All sheets of drywall should have a date stamp printed on them.  It will list the month, day and year in which the drywall was manufactured.

If your drywall was manufactured after 1990 it will not contain any asbestos. However if it’s before 1990 a gypsum recycling center will not accept it unless it has been tested for Asbestos. Which is where we come in!

What do I do with drywall that doesn’t have a date stamp?

Non date-stamped drywall can still be recycled at New West Gypsum as long as you can prove that it is free of asbestos. This can be determined by testing the drywall compound. As long as you present them with paperwork and your test results you will be able to recycle non date-stamped drywall.
