What is Asbestos?

The term asbestos refers to a group of silicate minerals that are composed of tiny, fibrous crystals. Although they are microscopic in nature, these fibers are extremely durable and can easily become airborne and inhaled. The particles have a tendency to cling to the tissues of the lungs and other areas of the respiratory system due to their shape. In the respiratory system, they cause inflammation and lead to a number of serious health issues.

Asbestos fibers are strong, durable, and non-combustible. It is its unique qualities that supported its use in a number of commercial and industrial building construction settings in the mid-1900’s. Although its use has diminished in recent decades, there are still many materials that contain asbestos, especially those found in older houses and commercial properties.

It is highly advised that homeowners do not attempt to perform asbestos testing on their own. Asbestos fibers can be released into the air and inhaled. Thus, it is important to hire certified professionals who know what they’re doing when it comes to asbestos testing.
